Winter Japan Itinerary — 10 to 12 Nights
One of the nicest things about coming in winter is how crisp, sunny and dry it is. Many sights are far less crowded, and accommodation is often a third cheaper. Tokyo, Kamakura, Shibu Onsen, skiing.
Winter Tokyo 3 nights
Fewer tourists, crisper light, warmer food. Ramen shops, kissaten coffee, department store basements, museums. Try staying in Ueno or Kichijoji for less tourist Tokyo.
- Fuunji Ramen — tsukemen dipping ramen
- Kayaba Coffee — 1938 kissaten in Yanaka
- Nezu Museum — stunning gardens
Kamakura + Enoshima 2 nights
One hour from Tokyo. Great Buddha, Hokokuji bamboo temple, Komachi-dori shopping street. Take the coastal Enoden train to Enoshima island — caves, shrine, sunset views.
Shibu Onsen 2 nights
Beyond beautiful in winter. The Kanaguya Ryokan may have inspired Spirited Away. Walk the streets visiting nine public onsen. Jigokudani Snow Monkeys — wild monkeys bathing in hot springs, 30-minute walk through snowy forest.
Skiing 3 nights
Nozawa Onsen or Myoko Kogen. Japanese ski towns are villages first, resorts second. Incredible snow, cheap lessons, amazing village food at night.
Nagano City & Togakushi
Stay near Nagano station. Togakushi is the antithesis of crowded resorts — local, family-focused, wide-open runs, zero wait at lifts. Five minutes from Shinkansen back to Tokyo.
